NTEA—the association for the work truck industry—needs help to better inform its discussions with Transport Canada as it considers creating a manufacturer reporting system to identify possible safety-related defects.
In 2021, Transport Canada outlined its intention for a new Analysis of Technical Information for Vehicles and Equipment (ACTIVE) program, which would be similar to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) Early Warning Reporting system.
The ACTIVE program aims to improve Transport Canada's knowledge of potential safety issues and defects and to increase the automotive industry’s awareness and accountability for the safety performance of its products.
Transport Canada has indicated that it is aiming for Fall 2023 publication in Canada Gazette Part I, which would allow for public consultation on the proposed regulations.
The ACTIVE program includes a number of new information-sharing requirements; however, the requirements differ depending on the prescribed class of company defined by the yearly volume of vehicles manufactured for sale, imported, or sold in Canada.
The NTEA is seeking to better understand the potential impacts of the proposed ACTIVE program and the subset of Canadian membership that would be impacted.
