Sacramento, California – Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) has partnered with Zeus Electric Chassis, Inc. alongside the California Mobility Center (CMC) to purchase five all-electric, custom work trucks as part of its plan to transition to a completely electric fleet. The trucks are the only fully electric, medium-duty class work truck chassis produced in North America and will add to SMUD’s fleet of over 950 total assets, including service trucks, trailers and other equipment.
In addition to the new vehicles, SMUD also purchased 16 new Chevy Bolt vehicles last year, giving the company a total of 122 electric and hybrid vehicles across its fleet. The addition of five new electric vehicles brings SMUD closer to their goal of electrifying 25% of their fleet by 2022.
The new vehicles will be fabricated by Zeus in collaboration with the CMC, adhering to the design specifications outlined by SMUD fleet engineers. The project has been given a nine-month lead time, with hopes of having the vehicles operational by the end of 2021.
SMUD has provided electricity to Sacramento County for over 75 years and was introduced to Zeus through collaboration with the California Mobility Center. The CMC oversees policy, funding and commercialization of clean transportation technologies such as autonomous transport, electric vehicles, public transit, battery storage and more, hoping to increase mobility, access to employment, healthcare and education.
